Phase 4

Containment & Occupant Protection

Phase 5

Source Removal

The primary remediation goal is removal of contaminated reservoirs, not simply killing or staining them.

Porous materials may require complete removal.
Semi-porous materials may require abrasive physical cleaning.
Non-porous materials may be cleaned and verified.
Structural materials may require HEPA vacuuming, wire brushing, sanding, media blasting, or other physical methods.
Stain treatment is not the same thing as remediation.
Fogging is not a substitute for physical source removal.
Encapsulation should not be used to hide active contamination or wet materials.

After removal, the structure needs detailed cleaning.

Phase 8

PRV / Clearance

PRV should occur before containment is removed or reconstruction begins whenever possible.
